Happiness Is a Choice & Here Are 5 Ways to Choose It

In life, there are things we can control, and there are things we can't, so why are you depriving yourself of happiness trying to change something that simply can't be changed? I'll tell you why.

Many of us (myself included at times) are paralysed by fear of not knowing. Not knowing what the future holds or not knowing if we made the right decision. A fear of choosing to do what we love and being judged for it; and we let this control us.

Here's the thing, there are going to ebbs and flows in life, but are you going to allow the fear of the unknown control you? Or are you going to take control of your life?

Yes? Good, because guess what happiness is a choice, YOUR choice.

Of course, there are going to be external barriers in life. We don't all have the same privileges as others so it won't always be easy, but that's life. There are going to be barriers that we all have to overcome but they're an opportunity to make us stronger.

Without the lows, we wouldn't appreciate the highs.

Put Things in Perspective

It's how you choose to respond to your disadvantages because no matter how bad you think you have it, someone has it far worse.

Are you going to accept that this feeling of hopelessness is your life? Or do you choose hope and happiness because you're a powerful being and only YOU have the power to make that choice.

Practice Gratitude

Practising gratitude has been a blessing in my life because, I wouldn't be where I am on my self-love journey without it. Be grateful for what you have now while working towards your goals.

Practise Self-Love

You knew this one was coming.

Learning to truly love yourself and believing that you are worthy will truly bring you happiness in life. Of course, we all have our battles, but committing to being yourself and not comparing yourself to others will bring you happiness.

When you don't need the reassurance from anyone else and you know that you are enough, you can truly be happy.

Don't Label Yourself

Your job title, the school you went to, the size of your body, your financial situation or education level does not define you.

The person you are is not defined by a label but by how you treat others and make them feel. It's defined by how you treat yourself, your integrity, and the energy and love of life, these are the things that matter.

Reframing

It's ok to be upset, frustrated and angry, these are not "bad emotions", they're just emotions. Everyone experiences them, but it's about your self awareness and how you're able to pick yourself up and dust yourself off.

I give an example of this in my latest podcast interview with Rachel from The Gentle Podcast.

We discuss how I still have "negative thoughts", but I have the awareness to know when it's happening and how to reframe things.

By creating a different way of looking at your situation you're able to validate that you're having negative thoughts and use your mindset to defeat them.

There are so many ways to view the same situation, it about your mindset and choosing happiness or at the very least, not letting it defeat you.

You have a choice on how to deal with the stuff that life throws at you every day - do you choose happiness, humour and a sense of perspective or do you choose to let life get your down?

I know what I choose.
