Hey guys, welcome back to the podcast or if you're new here, welcome. Thank you so much for joining me on the podcast in 2020, in this new year, which, if I'm being honest, has been a mix-match of emotions.
I don't know about you guys, but I think just over the holiday season, when you're just like, "What day is it? What's happening? What am I doing with my life?" And just the pressures can get to you in a way.
If I'm being honest, I have been really struggling to get going in the new year and I know it's due to a lot of factors. There's no one thing that's really holding me back. But what I really wanted talk about in today's podcast is just really getting back on your feet when you struggling with taking action in your life.

I want to talk about new beginnings, getting started, and just really breaking through action paralysis because I think we all go through it.
Where you either have analysis paralysis on making a particular decision or, if you're like me, and you're kind of struggling right now with action paralysis. I've been working through these emotions, to break through action paralysis and just get reinvigorated, about the year because I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to really start the year off right and have everything together, and it's just not the case for a lot of us.
I just want you to know if you're listening to this and you're feeling stuck, I am right there with you.
I feel like during the holidays like I said, we're all just in this stage of limbo, and I know there's been a lot of breakups. There's been a lot of changes in people's lives and it's just time to shake it off, as Taylor Swift says, sorry to be really, really lame and say that, but it's just time for us to shake it off because it's never too late for new beginnings.
The start of the new year is gone, but it doesn't mean it's too late - I'm just sick of that all or nothing mentality.
Today I'm feeling better, today I'm feeling creative and today I'm taking action. I'm back on the podcast and I don't 100%, know what I want to talk about, but I know that I need to take action to break through this feeling, just this icky feeling of "What am I doing? What the hell are you doing, Brooke? Get your shit together please."
So I just wanted to start the podcast with that.
Just letting you know that if you're feeling a bit stuck, if you're feeling a bit icky, if you've gone through a breakup or you've changed your job or something has happened this year that you just can't get past, it's never too late to turn the boat around and get back on track where waters are calm, you're feeling aligned, happy, and you're creating and you just food good, you feel aligned.
In 2019 I was finding myself, and this year I really want to go back to figuring our who I am and doing what excites me. Go back to creating heartfelt content that is really going to serve you guys, that is going to help you guys live your best life, because helping you is my desire. That's what I desire for 2020.
What has been holding you back?
So let's jump into the podcast and start off by really thinking about what are the potential things that have been holding you back?
For me, as an example, in 2019 I had my full time job, which was nine to five, I'm driving to and from work, which is almost a three hour commute in total. As well as working with one of my closest friends who I absolutely love, Erin, and working in her business has been one of the most game changing experiences.
Working with Erin has been just such a massive life learning experience for me, and I've really taken away so much from that experience, helping Erin build her business. I've really found a friend and Erin and I've learned a lot about, "What do I want from life, what do I want to create, who do I want to help?"
I suggest you ask yourself the same or similar questions.
So for 2018/19, I was working with Erin, and I had this purpose to really help her grow her business and help her on her mission, but I kind of lost sight of, "What is my mission? What am I trying to create? What do I want."
So I said to myself, "Okay, I love working with Erin, and I'm doing really well with Erin and I'm so content, that I almost need to just shake myself and be like, 'What are you doing?'
I was kind of in limbo and just living day to day without really thinking about what I wanted for the future.
And so I ended up leaving my job with Erin. I'm still working full time in the health and leisure industry, but I have all this spare time that I'm now like, "Okay, what do I do with it?" Because I was so used to getting up early, going to work, doing my nine to five, coming home and then working on Erin's stuff. I'm kind of like, "What now?
And that's what I was struggling with - what now? Where do I even start?
So I went back to basics and narrowing down to what lights me up inside and that's helping you guys with improving your body image, with your mindset, with all of that. The things that I've learned and that have helped me in life, I want to help you guys.
Categorise your decisions
Having too many options was almost paralysing me. And when I say paralysing, I mean I wasn't able to take any action because I just had so many options.
You know, when you only have a couple of options, it's easy to choose on what you want to do. But when you just have so much time and so many options, it's like, "Where do I start?" You just don't.
So one of my first tips that I can give you if you are struggling with action paralysis is to categorise your decisions. If you are feeling overwhelmed by a number of things that you need to be working on, like for me, I have the podcast, I have my YouTube channel, I have social media and I love all of them. But if you have a list of decisions that are almost paralysing/overwhelming so you, you need to try putting them into two categories.
Now vs Later
Create two lists, and one will include decisions that need to be made now vs decisions that can wait.
What do you need to do right now to take the next step forward, versus the other category, which is decisions that can wait. They can wait until later on. I really had to just make the decision that what's going to get me started right now?
What do I do right now to get me started? And that takes me to my next step, which was what I'm doing right now? And it's just taking messy action.
Take messy action
Like I said at the start of this podcast, do I know where this is going? Not 100%, but I know what I'm struggling with. I'm struggling with taking action, and so I'm making a podcast on struggling to take action, which is kind of perfect in a roundabout way, but I just decided that I needed to take some messy action.
I knew really wanted to connect with you guys again and just do what feels good.
It really feels good to be sitting down talking to you guys and hopefully helping you guys through something that I'm currently going through and I'm trying to work through.
So categorise your decisions, what do you have to do right now to move forward versus what can wait till later on? And then take some messy action. It doesn't have to be perfect. Being a perfectionist can really, stop you from just achieving your goals because it just holds you back, because it'll never be perfect. You could work on something for a whole year and it will still never be right. You just need to take that messy action, just do it.
Set yourself a time limit
And then the next thing you want to do is set a time limit on taking that messy action. Yesterday I jumped on my Instagram stories. I started creating content for my Instagram @bybrookelindsay, and I just did the 10 year challenge post, which I'm very late to the party with, but I was like, you know what, I do not even care because this feels good for me.
I just wrote a really heartfelt caption that I just wanted to put out there into the universe that I really want to look back on in the next decade.
I think that's what 2020 is for me. It's kind of like documenting my journey and helping you guys because that's why I started YouTube videos and that kind of stuff was to really document that time in my life and what I was doing and what I loved. So that's kind of what I'm going back to this year.
I did those stories yesterday where I talked about struggling with this and so many of you guys went in the same boat. And that's what led me just to take action on this podcast because I knew that I wasn't alone, and I knew that this could potentially help some of you guys because you're also struggling with getting started and everyone else seemed to be so excited and achieving their goals and blah blah blah.
And I was just like, "I'm just not in the same boat." So to feel that some of you guys were also struggling was kind a kick in the butt to be like, "Brooke, get your shit together. Get on the podcast and actually serve people and help people. That is your purpose. So what are you doing?"
So I was like, "Okay, I don't have time today," because at the time we were looking for a car. So we have settled on the car and today I was back in the office and as soon as I got home I just got on the podcast.
I'm probably rambling, it's not perfect, but it's messy action and I set a time limit. As soon as I have a free evening, which was tonight, I'm going to start taking action.
Setting timers is also great when you're struggling just in your day to day. If you want to get something done and it's just about eating away at you slowly, and you keep putting it off and procrastinating and doing the easy stuff first.
Stop. Set a timer and be like, "Right, this should realistically only take me half an hour to get done if I just put my head down and do it." So set yourself a 30 minute timer and be like, "Right, the next 30 minutes are dedicated to just doing this," and I promise you, as soon as you just start and you take that messy action, you may have no clue what you're doing, but as soon as you just start, you've set the time, and you're focused on that one thing, it will get done and you will move on to the next thing and you will feel so good for it.
The next thing I wanted to talk about is I think something that we all struggle with, especially if you're an entrepreneur or you're working on your business and you feel like you're alone. Like me, when I was struggling with action paralysis and over the holidays I just struggled with feeling alone and feeling like I was trying my best at everything, but I really wasn't in the right mindset.
I knew quick smart that I needed to snap out of that and I had to do it now. I know that by communicating and jumping back online... So many people demonise social media, but when I jump online and I communicate with you guys on Instagram stories or messages, comments, anything, just the love that I feel from you guys back is so comforting.
Phone a friend or find your community
Phone a friend, jump online, jump on stories, find a business bestie, find a mentor, find someone that you can talk to. And guys you don't have to know these people in real life. I've made a so many beautiful, amazing friends online that support me and I support them and we just chat online. And even just having that, a sense of community is game changing.
You need to be able to communicate how you're feeling. As soon as I told you guys on my stories, I'm really struggling with action paralysis and content creation and I've left Erin and I'm feeling really stuck. Where do I start? I feel like I'm starting over. You guys were like, "Oh my God, same."
So by doing that it just got me back into the rhythm of things. It also made me feel like I wasn't alone because you guys were messaging me and responding to my snaps and my stories. It's just really nice to feel like you're not alone.
If you're struggling with action paralysis, just talk to someone about it. What are you struggling with? And I'm sure once you talk to them about it, whether it's getting started in your career or you're struggling with money or your mindset or your relationships. As soon as you start talking it out with someone, it may not be as big a problem as you think, and also it can help you get started or help you figure out what should be next.
Just categorising those things into what can I do now to change this situation? And then also what can wait until later? It's not a big issue.
Finding someone you can chat to, whether it's a business bestie, whether it's a mentor, whether you want to speak to me, head over to social media and just send me a DM. I love chatting to you guys and hearing from you.
Work on your mindset
This has been huge for me and I'd say this is probably what I'll leave this podcast on because I think it's such a big topic but I think it's so overlooked. So many people set goals in the new year for changing how they look and their body and getting into the gym. But for me, and for so many of you, I'm sure it's been working on your mindset and how you see things and the things that you tell yourself.
I'll tell you one thing, the law of attraction is real. You will attract what you are.
If you are sad, if you are down, a few are struggling because you're only looking at all the bad things in life, that is what you will attract into your life. That's exactly was what I was attracting over the holidays. I felt like I just couldn't catch up and I felt like I was focusing on the negatives and I wasn't able to just get out of my own mind.
It had nothing to do with losing weight or anything like that, but as soon as I got back into moving and being in my body and my mind, I felt so much better for it because I felt like I had clarity.
Once I got back into routine, started listening to podcasts, once I started getting inspired by others and what they were talking about and YouTube videos and started getting back into what sets my soul on fire, I was able to see the positives in life and say what I should be so, so grateful for.
I have an amazing career, I have you guys, this amazing community online. I have the podcast. I have my relationships with my partner. I have my family. We're healthy, we're safe here in Australia in our location. And we're not affected by the bush fires. I have so much to be grateful for. And once I started to look at the positives, I was able to bring myself out of that negative mindset.
If you've been struggling as well with action paralysis and feeling like you're stuck, I hope these little tips can help you in some way. And the biggest thing guys, is to just remember that you're not alone.
Reach out to people. I'm here for you guys and I hope that this has helped you in some way. It's been kind of therapeutic for me in a way. I hope you guys are having an amazing day wherever you are, and I will speak to you all very, very soon.
